How do I know if I need orthodontic treatment?

We invite you to come into our office for an orthodontic consultation. During this meeting, your orthodontist will thoroughly examine your entire oral cavity and determine if the treatment is beneficial for you. Sometimes the treatment is needed even if your teeth appear to be straight. We are here to let you know if orthodontic treatment is something you might need now or in the future.

What are the signs of orthodontic problems?

  1. If your teeth are starting to become misaligned or if your teeth begin to overlap, orthodontics would be very beneficial.
  2. When you bite down, do the front top teeth align to the bottom front teeth? If so, treatment is not needed. But if the front teeth protrude further than the bottom teeth, if they cover most of the bottom teeth, or the top teeth are behind the bottom teeth, treatment is needed.
  3. Do your jaws shift off center when you bite down? Well, this means treatment is necessary.

At what age should I take my child to the orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that you bring your child into the office at the age of 7 to get their oral cavity evaluated. Early evaluation is very important because it allows us to take care of any problems before they become worse.

Can I still have braces if I have missing teeth?

Yes you can still have braces when you have missing teeth. If you have missing teeth, the remaining natural teeth have the potential to drift out of place, which can create a large problem in the future. If you have orthodontic treatment, it will correct and prevent the problem and will also provide the proper alignment for your dentist to replace the missing teeth.

What is the length or duration of orthodontic treatment?

Each patient is different, but we generally expect 12 to 14 months in the Phase I treatment. Going through Phase II or having full braces typically lasts 18 to 36 months. Throughout this time, you will continually come into our practice to get your orthodontic appliances corrected and adjusted.
